背景信息	PUMA belongs to the Bcl-2 family of proapoptotic proteins, which includes Bim, Bad, Bid, and Noxa. The PUMA gene encodes two BH3-domain–containing proteins termed PUMA-a and PUMA-b. Upon activation by p53, PUMA binds to Bcl-2, localizes to the mitochondria to induce cytochrome c release, and activates the rapid induction of programmed cell death. PUMA may be a direct mediator of p53-induced apoptosis. Previous studies have also indicated that PUMA may play a role in various cancers.
