背景信息	The protein named POU domain class 3 transcription factor 1 or alternatively Octamer-binding protein 6, POU domain transcription factor SCIP, or Octamer binding transcription factor 6, and encoded by the human gene named POU3F1 or OCT6/OTF6 is an important developmental transcription factor particularly for embryogenesis and neurogenesis. Expressed primarily in the developing brain, POU3F1 mediates a number of important arenas including telencephalic development, as well as the transition from ensheathing promyelinating Schwann cells to myelinating cells in the peripheral nervous system. POU3F1 is also expressed in oligodendrocyte precursors, testis, and skin. However, it is best characterized in Schwann cells. Interestingly too, POU3F1 is also inducible by interferon in cells such as fibroblasts where POU3F1 directs responses to such insults like dsRNA responses. In adults, POU3F1 expression is found in the adult brains of schizophrenic patients but not in normal patients, suggesting a possible link to the mental pathology of the disease. In other tissues such as testis, the expression of POU3F1 in spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) is an intrinsic regulator of GDNF-induced survival and self-renewal factor necessary for the persistence of SSCs. Thus, POU3F1 plays a number of important roles governing the expression of many families of genes during development and POU3F1 expression in the adult may also play roles in diseases.
