背景信息	Cytochrome P450 17A1 (CYP17A1) or alternatively Cytochrome P450-C17, CYPXVII, or Steroid 17-alpha-hydroxylase/17, lyase-steroid 17-alpha-monoxygenase is an enzyme encoded by the human gene CYP17A1/CYP17/S17AH that is the enzyme that plays a critical role in the breakdown of cholesterol into various important hormones such as glucocorticoids and androgens (sex hormones). Specifically, Cytochrome P450 17A1 converts pregnenolone and progesterone into their 17 hydoxy forms which are then converted to mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids. Cytochrome P450 17A1 can also convert these 17 hydroxy forms into DHEA and androstenedione which become male sex hormones and androgens. In cancer, because prostate cancers often proliferate in response to androgens, Cytochrome P450 17A1 is now also a focus of much drug and inhibitor research as a cancer preventative. Interestingly Cytochrome P450 17A1 polymorphisms are also associated with various forms of lymphoma and other cancers, as well as a number of mineral, salt and sex hormone effected diseases. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-Cytochrome P450 17A1 rabbit monoclonal antibody has been tested in western blot on human adrenal gland, SK-OV-3, HeLa and Jurkat cell lysates and in fluorescent immunocytochemistry on HeLa cells in culture.
