背景信息	Mucin-2 (MUC2) is just one of several human mucin proteins but it is the major one lining the intestine and airways. Its role there is largely as a protective or lubricating barrier against particles and infectious antigens, and MUC2 plays a major role in excluding bacteria from the inner mucus layer of the gut. It is a secreted protein with expression being the most abundant in the colon, small intestine, bronchus, cervix and gall bladder. The goblet cells in the epithelial lining of lumen of the large intestine are major producers, and MUC2 like other mucins, is heavily glycosylated which appears to help it polymerize into a gel at a pH lower than six. The gel provides an insoluble mucous barrier that serves to protect the intestinal epithelium. Mucins are a family of high molecular weight, heavily glycosylated proteins produced by epithelial tissues in most animals. Their key characteristic is their ability to form gels or slimy thick liquids, and thus they are a major component in most gel-like secretions, serving functions from lubrication, to protection, to chemical barriers and even cell signaling. In humans they are most commonly seen as secreted onto mucosal surfaces or as a component of saliva. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-MUC2 rabbit polyclonal antibody has been tested in western blot on human small intestine lysate and in immunohistochemistry on paraffin embedded human colon tissue sections.
