背景信息	The protein named Ceramide glucosyltransferase, also known as GLCT-1, Glucosylceramide synthase (GCS), UDP-glucose ceramide glucosyltransferase, or UDP-glucose:N-acylsphingosine D-glucosyltransferase, and encoded by the human gene named UGCG, is the enzyme that catalyzes the first step in glycosphingolipid biosynthesis by transferring glucose on to ceraminde. The product of the reaction is glycosylceramide which serves as the core building block for more than 300 different glycosphingolipids. UGCG is expressed in all tissues but it is particularly important in nervous tissue where neuronal function essentially depends on plasma membrane-located gangliosides, and the coordination of metabolic signals requires the expression of UGCG. Recent evidence have shown that UGCG derived gangliosides interacting with leptin receptors in the neuronal membrane modulate leptin-stimulated formation of signaling metabolites in hypothalamic neurons. Furthermore, ganglioside-depleted hypothalamic neurons fail to adapt their activity as determined by the activation of c-Fos expression in response to alterations in peripheral energy signals, thus indicating that UGCG is critical for normal energy metabolism in neurons. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-UGCG rabbit polyclonal antibody has been tested in western blots on A375 cell lysates and in paraffin embedded immunohistochemistry on human lymphoma tissue sections.
