背景信息 Matrilin 1 (MATN1), also known as cartilage matrix protein (CMP), is a member of a growing family of non-collagen-like extra-cellular matrix (ECM) proteins that play important roles in controlling the cellular phenotypes of developing mesenchymal stems cells (MSCs) during chondrocyte development. MATN1 is highly expressed in cartilage during chondrogenesis and was thought to play a role in cartilage structure; however, studies with knockout mice do not show any significant defects in cartilage or extracellular matrix structure. This is likely because its brother protein MATN3, which is also expressed in the identical window as MATN1, can replace MATN1 function. MATN1/MATN3 double mutants do show abnormalities in their cartilage. Polymorphisms within the MATN1 gene have been associated with inherited diseases associated with cartilage and chondrodysplasias including Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), particularly in Asian populations.
