This potent cytokine works by stimulating the growth and activation of certain B cells and T cells, as well as a variety of other hematopoietic cell types, and is important for the regulation and development of T helper subsets. Based upon current literature, IL-4 has also been shown to exhibit antitumor activity in rodent experimental gliomas, which is likely mediated by the actions of IL-4 on a variety of immune cells present in and around the tumor masses.
