背景信息	The protein currently named N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfatase or alternatively Chondroitinsulfatase (Chondroitinase), Galactose-6-sulfate sulfatase (GalN6S), or N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase, (GalNAc6S sulfatase) and encoded by the human gene named GALNS is an enzyme located in the lysosome of most cells. GALNS degrades chondroitin sulfate sidechains and keratin sulfate side chains, specifically those having 6-sulfate moieties on them. These large sugar molecules are also known as glycosaminoglycans or mucopolysaccharides. Defects in GALNS lead to a buildup of keratin sulfate in the lysosomes and can cause skeletal abnormalities and cloudy corneas as these areas are high in keratin sulfate. Interestingly because GALNS and other glycosaminoglycan enzymes are sensitive to sulfate, recent research has shown that common food additives such as carrageenan (often added to ice cream for stability) can disrupt normal gene expression of GALNS in human epithelial cells leading to possible changes in cell structure and function. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-GALNS rabbit polyclonal antibody has been tested in western blot on human liver tissue extracts and in paraffin embedded immunohistochemistry on human kidney tissue sections.
