背景信息	The protein commonly known as Cytochrome P450/C27/25, or more recently as Sterol 26-hydroxylase-mitochondrial, or earlier as 5-beta-cholestane-3-alpha, 7-alpha, 12-alpha-triol 27-hydroxylase, Cytochrome P450 27, Sterol 27 hydroxylase, or Vitamin D(3) 25-hydroxylase, and encoded by the human gene named CYP27A1/CYP27, is a mitochondrial P450 enzyme. CYP27A1 catalyzes the first step in the oxidation of the side chain of sterol and it plays an important role in the production of hormones and bile acids. CYP27A1 catabolizes cholesterol to bile acids and it is involved in the metabolism of Vitamin D3. CYP27A1 is expressed in many different tissues including muscle, brain and immune cells such as macrophages. Because of the recent interest in the active form of vitamin D being an anti-cancer agent, research into the expression, augmentation and control of CYP27A1 in cancerous tissues is expanding. CYP27A1 is expressed in many cancers including prostate cancer and it is hoped that the development of analogs of vitamin D which would be altered by CYP27A1 into effective anti-cancer treatments. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-CYP27A1 rabbit polyclonal antibody has been tested in western blots on NIH3T3 cell extracts and in paraffin embedded immunohistochemistry on human liver tissue sections.
