A member of the Inhibitors of Apoptosis (IAP) proteins, cIAP-2 contains a BIR (baculovirus IAP repeat) domain near the amino-terminus. This BIR domain can bind some caspases. Many members of the IAP family of proteins block proteolytic activation of caspase-3 and 7. XIAP, cIAP-1 and cIAP-2 appear to block cytochrome c induced activation of caspase-9, thereby preventing initiation of the caspase cascade. The encoded protein inhibits apoptosis induced by serum deprivation but does not affect apoptosis resulting from exposure to menadione, a potent inducer of free radicals. TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Highly expressed in fetal lung, and kidney. In the adult, expression is mainly seen in lymphoid tissues, including spleen, thymus and peripheral blood lymphocytes.
DISEASE: SwissProt: Q13489 # A chromosomal aberration involving BIRC3 is recurrent in low-grade mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma). Translocation t(11;18)(q21;q21) with MALT1. This translocation is found in approximately 50% of cytogenetically abnormal low-grade MALT lymphoma.
