背景信息	IL-18 is a proinflammatory cytokine, a member of the IL-1 superfamily, involved in cell-mediated immunity in the presence of microbial infection. Stimulation by IL-18 is causal to the release of interferon-γ by NK cells and some T cells, which in turn serves to activate macrophages. Inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-18, can incite the degeneration of nerve cells and increase the production of plaque typical to Alzheimer’s disease. IL-18 has been of interest in studying several disease pathways including endometriosis, lupus nephritis and Alzheimer’s disease.
