背景信息	Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) is an extremely important conveyor of signal transduction. A true, secondary messenger, it plays critical linking roles in a huge array of biological processes, termed the cAMP dependent signaling pathways. cAMP is derived from adenosine triphosphate (ATP) via an adenyl cyclase located on the inner side of the plasma membrane. Adenyl cyclase is activated via numerous stimulatory and inhibitory G protein coupled pathways and partners. cAMP and its associated kinases function in several biochemical processes, including the regulation of glycogen, sugar, and lipid metabolism. cAMP chief kinase is protein kinase A (PKA) or cAMP-dependent protein kinase) PKA is normally inactive as a tetrameric holoenzyme consisting of a regulatory subunit in complex with a catalytic subunit. Binding of cAMP to the regulatory subunits of PKA, releases the catalytic subunits to go free and phosphorylate target proteins. Now cAMP function is not just limited to kinases. cAMP plays a role in modulating intercellular calcium via its direct activation of calcium channels and thereby contributing to the regulation of important hormones like growth hormone. cAMP is also a chemical messenger between cells. cAMP appears to regulate various ion channels called hyperpolarization-activate cyclic nucleotide-gated channels (HCN). When cAMP stimulates the HCN, the channels open, closing the brain cell to communication and thus interfering with the function of the prefrontal cortex. Research into cAMP in terms of brain function is particularly important in age-related illnesses and disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) of both children and adults. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-cAMP rabbit monoclonal antibody has been tested in both competitive and competitive inhibition ELISA in vitro assays.
