背景信息	Osteocalcin, or alternatively known as Bone Gla (BGP) or Gamma-carboxyglutamic acid containing protein, is encoded by the BGLAP gene in humans and is a bone protein that constitutes 1-2% of the total bone protein in the adult. It strongly binds apatite (a phosphate mineral grouping consisting of several biologically produced mineral groups containing high levels of fluoride, chloride and hydroxyl ions) and calcium. Osteocalcin is manufactured exclusively by osteoblasts (bone forming) cells and its level in the blood has been used as a biomarker for the level of bone production. Osteocalcin also has hormone like functions since it can cause beta cells of the pancreas to release more insulin and at the same time cause adipose cells to release adiponectin which increases insulin’s effectiveness, so it also being studied as a possible treatment for type II diabetes. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-Osteocalcin rabbit monoclonal antibody has been tested in western blot in on recombinant human Osteocalcin samples.
