    背景信息 Matrix metalloproteinase 8 (MMP-8 or neutrophil collagenase), first described in neutrophils, is a classical type-I collagenase. Like MMP-1, MMP-8 is able to cleave intact type-I collagen at the same site in all three strands. MMP-8 is heavily glycosylated, and the inactive enzyme precursor proform or zymogen has a mass of ~85 kDa. The zymogen is quickly activated to the 64 kDa form, and this breaks down to a cascade of active forms, such as the 58 kDa form and others. MMP-8 is not produced by most cell types; it has been found in PMNL neutrophils, arthritic chondrocytes and gingival fibroblasts.

Most MMP's are secreted as inactive proproteins which are activated when cleaved by extracellular proteinases. However, the enzyme encoded by this gene is stored in secondary granules within neutrophils and is activated by autolytic cleavage. Its function is degradation of type I, II and III collagens.
