背景信息	The protein named Follistatin-related protein 1 or Follistatin-like protein 1 and encoded by the human gene FSTL1/FRP is a member of the secreted protein acidic rich in cysteins (SPARC) family. FSTL1 plays an important role in many different signaling pathways, including bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling and in many different developmental processes like, dorso-ventral axis establishment, skeletal, lung and ureter development. FSTL1 is thought to function through inhibiting interactions with the BMP signaling pathway, although, in various disease models, different signaling pathways, like activation of pAKT, pAMPK, Na/K-ATPase, or innate immune responses, are linked to FSTL1 activity as well. FSTL1 is a secreted protein made by epithelial and other cells types, and FSTL1 is also being studied as a potential biomarker for inflammatory diseases. Finally FSTL1 has recently been shown to be important in wound healing. Through the interaction of the microRNA 198 (miR-198) which binds FSTL1 mRNA, which in turn affects FSTL1 expression, the dynamics of normal wound healing and in diseases such as ulcers where the delicate balance of expression and suppression of FSTL1 and other proteins has been upset. The absence of FSTL1 combined with the overexpression of miR-198 appear to cause a failure in re-epithelialization of the wound so ulceration continues, thus research into FSTL1 and its wide ranging activities is continuing.
