背景信息	Ferroportin-1 is an important iron transport protein that mediates iron transfer from the mother to the fetus during pregnancy. Ferroportin-1 in the adult also mediates iron export from epithelial cells in the gut. Ferroportin-1 is expressed in the placenta, intestine, smooth muscle, spleen, and in the brain and tissues where iron transport is important. Ferroportin-1, because of its role in iron transport and the importance now of iron homeostasis in organs like the brain, is a focus of research in the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease
