背景信息 The protein Reticulon-2 (RTN2) or alternatively Neuroendocrine-specific protein-like 1 (NSP-like protein 1), Neuroendocrine-specific protein-like I (NSP-like protein I) or NSPLI and encoded by the human gene named RTN2/NSPL1 is an endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein that plays a role in endoplasmic reticulum structure as well as intracellular vesicular transport. There are at least two isoforms of RTN2, isoform A is enriched in brain, isoform B is enriched in skeletal muscle but also found expressed in the brain and in other tissues. RTN2 functions in assisting proteins through out the ER and ultimately to their destinations within the cell. For instance, research demonstrates that RTN2 isoform B assists in the ER exit and delivery to the plasma membrane of EAAC1, a glutamate transporter important in excitatory nerve function. Defects in RTN2 are the cause of hereditary spastic paraplegias a group of heterogeneous neurodegenerative diseases.
