背景信息	Nerve growth factor-beta (NGF-β) is a potent neurotrophic factor which supports the growth and survivability of nerve and/or glial cells. The active form of human beta-NGF is is a noncovalently disulfide-linked homodimer, formed by two 13.5 kDa polypeptide monomers (238 total amino acids). The three disulfide bonds are required for biological activity.

INVOLVEMENT IN DISEASE: Defects in NGF are the cause of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 5 (HSAN5) [MIM:608654]. The hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies are a genetically and clinically heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by degeneration of dorsal root and autonomic ganglion cells, and by sensory and/or autonomic abnormalities. HSAN5 patients manifest loss of pain perception and impaired temperature sensitivity, ulcers, and in some cases self-mutilation. The autonomic involvement is variable. SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the NGF-beta family.
