背景信息	Niemann-Pick C1 protein (NPC1) functions as an intracellular cholesterol transporter. NPC1 acts in concert with NPC2 to catalyze the mobilization of cholesterol within the multivesicular environment of the late endosome (LE)/ lysosomes to the ER and plasma membrane by an unknown mechanism. Cholesterol binds to NPC1 with the hydroxyl group buried in its binding pocket, but NPC1 binds oxysterol with higher affinity than cholesterol. NPC1 also has a possible role in vesicular trafficking in glia. NPC1 defects may cause Niemann-Pick disease type C1 (NPC1).
