背景信息	Vitamin B9 (folic acid and folate, or Vitamin M) is essential for metabolism in normal healthy humans. Humans cannot synthesize folate de novo; thus, folate has to be supplied through the diet to meet the daily requirements. The body needs folate to synthesize DNA, repair DNA, and methylate DNA as well as to act as a cofactor in various biological reactions. Folate is especially important for rapid cell division and growth during infancy and child development, and all humans require folic acid to make red blood cells. Folate is composed of the aromatic pteridine ring linked to para-aminobenzoic acid and one or more glutamate residues. Folic acid is itself not biologically active, but its biological importance is due to tetrahydrofolate and other derivatives after its conversion to dihydrofolic acid in the liver. Folate Receptor 1, Folate receptor alpha (FR-alpha), Adult folate-binding protein (FBP), folate receptor, adult, KB cells FBP and Ovarian tumor-associated antigen MOv18 are all names for the protein that is the primary receptor protein for folate in the mammals, and Folate Receptor 1 protein is expressed from the gene with the name FOLR1/FOLR. Folate Receptor 1 binds to folate and reduced folic acid derivatives and mediates the delivery of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate in to the interior of cells. The protein is expressed exclusively in epithelial tissues in the kidney, lung, and cerebellum. The Folate Recetor 1 protein is often upregulated in malignant tumors and can Folate Receptor 1 can be used as a marker in many tumors of epithelial origin. Defects in the Folate Receptor 1 gene are the cause for neurodegeneration and cerebral folate transport deficiency, and diagnosis is critical in early infancy because folinic acid therapy can reverse much of the clinical and brain abnormalities if caught in time.
