They are deposited in chromatin by large multiprotein complexes and play different roles from their cononical histones, in nucleosome deposition, chromatin remodeling, and gene regulation. Histones H3.X and H3.Y are novel primate-specific variants of histone H3 which are highly expressed in the brain and in various cancer cell lines.
