背景信息 Eukaryotic cells rely on actin and microtubule-based protein "motors" to generate intracellular movements. These protein "motors" contain specialized domains that hydrolyse ATP to produce force and movement along a cytoskeletal polymer (actin in the case of myosin family and microtubules in the case of the kinesin family and dyneins). Dynein has been implicated in cytoplasmic motile funtions, including chromosomal movement, retrograde organelle and axonal transport, the endocytic pathway, and the organization of the Golgi apparatus. Respiratory infections leading to chronic inflammation and bronchiectasis are recurrent, due to defects in the respiratory cilia; reduced fertility is often observed in male patients due to abnormalities of sperm tails. Half of the patients exhibit situs inversus, due to dysfunction of monocilia at the embryonic node and randomization of left-right body asymmetry. & Defects in DNAI1 are a cause of Kartagener syndrome [MIM:244400]. Kartagener syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the association of primary ciliary dyskinesia with situs inversus.
