IL-5 has been shown to promote the growth of immature hematopoietic BFU-E progenitors, as well as stimulate the activation and differentiation of eosinophils, and promote the generation of cytotoxic lymphocytes. In contrast to the human IL-5 protein, murine IL-5 also induces the differentiation and proliferation of pre-activated B-cells, which, when stimulated by bacterial endotoxin, induce the production and secretion of IgM and IgA.
