背景信息	The protein Carboxypeptidase B (CPB1) or alternatively named Pancreas-specific protein (PASP), and encoded by the human gene named CPB1/CPB/PCPB is a secreted enzyme in the blood and lymph that is produced in the pancreas. CPB1 cleaves 3’ terminal lysines or arginine residues off polypeptides. An important substrate for CPB1 is the protein C5a, a Complement protein present in the blood. CPB1 cleaves C5a to C5a-des-Arg. C5a is a potent leukocyte chemoattractant and inflammatory mediator, thus CPB1 plays a role in modulating our innate immunity afforded by Complement. C5a also is an anaphylatoxin, causing the release of histamine from mast cells. The cleavage of C5a by CPB1 to C5a des-Arg helps mediate this response as C5a des-Arg is a much less effective anaphylatoxin. Because C5a is such an important inflammatory mediator, CPB1 being its effecter is also studied as a possible treatment for controlling inflammatory diseases, many of which involve the Complement system. Also CPB1’s activity is often modified during infection, leading often leading to severe inflammatory responses such as that seen in LPS-induced sepsis, so research is focused on understanding the many causes of CPB1 post-translational modifications and their effects on disease. Moreover elevated levels of CPB1 are associated with pancreatitis and pancreatic graft rejection. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-CPB1 rabbit polyclonal antibody has been tested in western blot on mouse pancreas tissue lysates and in paraffin embedded immunohistochemistry on human pancreas tissue sections.
