背景信息 The protein named STAR, or Steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) or START domain-containing protein 1 (StARD1) and encoded by the human gene named STAR/STARD1 is a mitochondrial outer membrane protein that facilitates the transfer of cholesterol from the outer mitochondrial membrane into the inner membrane where it is cleaved in to pregnenolone. STAR plays an important role in steroid metabolism and cholesterol catabolism because the transport of cholesterol into the mitochondria is the rate-limiting step in steroid hormone biosynthesis. STAR expression is limited to the mitochondria and then only in the gonads, adrenal cortex and kidney tissues primarily, but other steroid producing tissues such as brain can also be found to express STAR. STAR expression is rapidly synthesized in response to stimulation of the cells to produce steroids; cells typically induce production via the action of luteinizing hormone (LH), ACTH, and angiotensin II through cAMP based second messenger systems. In addition to its role in steroid metabolism and cholesterol, STAR also plays a role in the production of bile acids by the liver and in the production of 27-hydroxycholesterol by macrophages and other immune cells when it is beneficial. Handling Recommendations: Upon receipt and prior to removing the cap, centrifuge the vial and gently mix the solution. Aliquot into microcentrifuge tubes and store at -20°C. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles, which may damage IgG and affect product performance.
