背景信息 PIWI-L1, also known as HIWI, is a member of the PIWI subfamily of Argonaute proteins. PIWI-L1 has both PAZ and Piwi motifs, which are critical for the biogenesis and function of small non-coding RNAs. PIWI-L1 plays a central role in spermatogenesis and maintaining germline integrity by repressing transposable elements and preventing their mobilization. Additionally, it has been shown that PIWI-L1 plays an important role in RNA silencing, stem cell self-renewal, and translational regulation in diverse organisms. Recent studies have shown that overexpression of PIWI-L1 is a potential biomarker for colon, gastric and other cancers. Other studies have shown that removing PIWI-L1 protein from single germline stem cells significantly decreases the rate of their division, suggesting that PIWI-L1 regulates the self-renewal capacity of the germline and hematopoietic stem cells. PIWI-L1 is detected in most fetal and adult tissues, as well as spermatocytes and spermatids during spermatogenesis.
