背景信息 Interleukin-15 (IL-15) is an inflammatory cytokine that may be linked to IL-17-mediated inflammation in psoriasis. IL-15 is most commonly found in skeletal muscle. IL-15 is also involved in T-cell homeostasis. IL-15 along with IL-7 have been shown to defend against microbes and tumors, but if the ratios are incorrect, increased levels of IL-15 can cause various autoimmune diseases. In mouse, IL-15 may play a role in mast cell homeostasis. IL-15 can also have some anti-tumor activity. Entrez基因汇总 The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine that regulates T and natural killer cell activation and proliferation. This cytokine and interleukine 2 share many biological activities. They are found to bind common hematopoietin receptor subunits, and may compete for the same receptor, and thus negatively regulate each other's activity. The number of CD8+ memory cells is shown to be controlled by a balance between this cytokine and IL2. This cytokine induces the activation of JAK kinases, as well as the phosphorylation and activation of transcription activators STAT3, STAT5, and STAT6. Studies of the mouse counterpart suggested that this cytokine may increase the expression of apoptosis inhibitor BCL2L1/BCL-x(L), possibly through the transcription activation activity of STAT6, and thus prevent apoptosis. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Isoform IL15-S48AA: Secreted.
Isoform IL15-S21AA: Cytoplasm. Nucleus. Note: IL15-S21AA is not secreted, but rather is stored intracellularly, appearing in the nucleus and cytoplasmic components.
TISSUE SPECIFICTY: Most abundant in placenta and skeletal muscle. It is also detected in the heart, lung, liver and kidney. IL15-S21AA is preferentially expressed in tissues such as testis and thymus.
SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the IL-15/IL-21 family.
