背景信息	The enzyme named Pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase 2 (P5C reductase 2, P5CR2) and encoded by the human gene named PYCR2 is a cytoplasmic ubiquitously expressed, mitochondrial protein enzyme that catalyzes the last step in proline biosynthesis, as well as, being a critical provider of NADP for energy metabolism in certain cells types such as red blood cells. Proline metabolism is linked to hyperprolinemia, schizophrenia, cutis laxa, and cancer. In cancer, tumor cells tend to rely on proline biosynthesis rather than salvage for protein production. Proline is synthesized from either glutamate or ornithine. Both are converted to pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C), and then to proline via PYCR2 or PYCR1 reductases. As such, PYCR2 may be a potential target for anti-cancer therapy. Also the expression of PYCR2 is thought to be influenced by a miRNA control mechanism specifically that of miR-143, thus miR143 is also a target of active research in cancer, and apoptosis as well.
