背景信息	The protein named Neuronal acetylcholine receptor subunit alpha-5 and encoded by the human gene named CHRNA5/NACHRA5 is part of the functional neuronal acetylcholine receptor (AChR). AChR is composed of two subunits, alpha and non-alpha(beta) subunits. Localized at the synapse and postsynaptic membranes the AChR mediates acetylcholine responsiveness in neurons. There are multiple types of AChRs in neurons and CHRNA5 is part of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor family. These ligand-gated ion channels mediate fast signal transmission at synapses and are responsive to both acetylcholine and nicotine. The neuronal subtypes of acetylcholine receptors, of which CHRNA5, is a part of, are a complex family of receptors typically having combinations of 9 different nicotinic alpha receptor subunits in combination with three different beta subunits. Each complex has slightly different sensitivities and the various subunit combinations are expressed differentially on different sets of neurons throughout the brain, as well as non-neuronal cells and various cancer cell lines. Interestingly too, various genetic mutations have been mapped to CHRNA5’s gene and these mutations have been associated with susceptibility to smoking related diseases and behavioral traits related to smoking diseases. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-CHRNA5 rabbit polyclonal antibody has been tested in western blot on Jurkat cell lysate.
