背景信息 The protein named ADP-ribosylation factor-like protein 6 or Bardet-Biedl syndrome 3 protein and encoded by the human gene ARL6 is a peripheral membrane protein that is important in intracellular protein transport particularly at the base of the ciliary organelle and in other cells such as those of the retina. ARL6 is expressed in cell projections, ciliated cells, cilium membrane, and retinal cells. The ARL6 transcript is up-regulated during erythropoietin-induced differentiation of erythroid cells and down-regulated during interleukin-6-induced macrophage differentiation, suggesting a possible role in hemopoietic development. In adult mice, ARL6 shows a tissue-specific expression pattern with the highest expression observed in the brain and kidney. Mutations in ARL6 are associated with Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) an autosomal recessive disorder resulting from structural and functional defects in numerous organs.
