背景信息	G-protein coupled receptor 56 (GPR56) is a novel, multi-pass membrane protein belonging to the G-protein coupled receptor 2 family and containing a characteristic, extracellular GPS domain. Although newly discovered, studies have suggested roles for the protein in the adhesion between developing neurons, regulating the integrity of pial basement membranes, regulating corticogenesis, and may also be involved in cancer cell metastasis and adhesion. Expression has been observed in a wide variety of peripheral tissues, but the most significant levels have been reported in brain, heart, and thyroid gland. Defects in GPR56 expression cause bilateral frontoparietal polymicrogyria (BFPP), a malformation of the brain in humans that is characterized by ataxia, seizures, disfigurement of the cerebral cortex, and mental retardation.
