背景信息	The protein currently named Alpha-1,3-mannosyl-glycoprotein 2-beta-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase or in older literature, N-glycosyl-oligosaccharide-glycoprotein N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase I (GNT-I or GlcNAc-T1) and encoded by the human gene named MGAT1 or GGNT1 or GLCT1 or GLYT1 or MGAT is a Golgi apparatus protein that is essential for protein glycosylation and the production of lipid-bound oligosaccharides. MGAT1 converts high mannose containing linkages to complex N-glycans moieties. MGAT1 is expressed in all tissues and is essential during embryogenesis and plays a major role in oncogenic signaling by increasing the number of tri and tetra-branched N-glycans. These N-glycans bind to galectins forming a multivalent lattice that enhances cell surface residency of growth factor receptors. MGAT1 is the first branching enzyme in the pathway and research has shown that down regulation of MGAT1 expression inhibits cancer cell migration and invasion but not proliferation, and as such MGAT1 is a target for anti-cancer therapy. EMD-Millipore’s Anti-MGAT1 rabbit polyclonal antibody has been tested in western blot on Y79 cell extracts and in paraffin embedded immunohistochemistry on human liver cancer sections and in fluorescent immunocytochemistry on HeLa cells in culture.
