背景信息	The protein encoded by the human gene named HBB is the beta subunit of human hemoglobulin. Mature hemoglobulin consists of two alpha chains and 2 beta chains in a quaternary complex with iron in the RBCs. HBB is also called beta-globin or hemoglobin beta chain. HBB can be cleaved into a smaller fragment called LVV-hemorphin-7 which potentiates the activity of bradykinin and decreases blood pressure. HBB becomes glycosylated non-enzymatically over time in the RBC as the cell ages. The glycosylation is increased in diabetes patients, and as such, the level of glucose-6-phosphate glycosylation is used as a biomarker for diabetic control. Defects in HBB expression are associated wtih various beta-thalassemias, as well as to sickle cell anemia, where a single amino acid changes the shape of the beta subunit and subsequently the shape and functionality of the mature hemoglobulin.
