背景信息 The protein named Pseudocholinesterase (BChE or BuChE), also known as plasma cholinesterase, butyrylcholine esterase, or acylcholine acylhydrolase, and encoded by the human gene named BCHE/CHE1, is a key enzyme that deactivates acetylcholine and is chiefly expressed in the liver. It is very similar to ACHE, or neuronal acetylcholinesterase but differs in its expression localization and substrate range. Cholinesterase (BCHE) can hydrolyze the artificial substrate butyrylcholine faster than the natural substrate acetylcholine, whereas ACHE does not hydrolyze butyrylcholine. Cholinesterase (BCHE) plays an important role in the metabolism of ester-based compounds including various local anesthetic compounds. The Cholinesterase (BCHE) level in the serum is used as biomarker for liver disease and heart attacks, and activity levels of BCHE (and ACHE) in the blood are also used as measure of toxic exposure to toxins such as insecticides. Differences in the functional activity of Cholinesterase (BCHE) are also being studied as potential biomarkers for various diseases including Alzheimer’s disease.
