The nucleosome is the first order of DNA compaction in the nucleus, and is the basic unit of chromatin. The structure of chromatin can be altered by post-translational modifications (PTM) occurring on the C- and N-terminal tails of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. Histone modifications can either provide or hinder access of key transcriptional complexes to DNA sequences and can regulate the expression of genes.
