Entrez基因汇总 This gene catalyzes a two-step reaction that involves the transfer of the adenosyl moiety of ATP to methionine to form S-adenosylmethionine and tripolyphosphate, which is subsequently cleaved to PPi and Pi. S-adenosylmethionine is the source of methyl groups for most biological methylations. The encoded protein is found as a homotetramer (MAT I) or a homodimer (MAT III) whereas a third form, MAT II (gamma), is encoded by the MAT2A gene. DISEASE: SwissProt: Q00266 # Defects in MAT1A are a cause of a form of hypermethioninemia [MIM:250850]; also called MAT I/III deficiency. The disease is characterized by fetid breath and dimethylsulfide excretion. Most mutations are transmitted in an autosomal recessive manner, but autosomal dominant inheritance has also been observed. The clinical consequences of hypermethioninemia are poorly understood. In some individuals, hypermethioninemia is apparently benign; in others, association of neurological problems with null mutations has been observed.
